Types of Dental Implants

Many company’s manufacturer dental implants and/or the materials used to create the restorations placed on top of them. As a result, dentists have many options for identifying the right treatment for specific patient needs. However, be aware that if you undergo an implant procedure by one dentist, then see a different dentist for a repair, your new dentist may have limited experience with, or may not have access to, the material components used by the previous dentist.

Dental implants usually are categorized based on the type of procedure used to place them: two-stage or single stage.

Cosmetic Dentists Bondi Junction All-on-4 Dental Implants

How are All-on-4 Dental Implants different from dentures?

All-on-4 implants are a permanent set of teeth that look and feel like natural teeth. All-on-4 dental implants:

Are permanent teeth that are brushed and cleaned like natural teeth

Do not have to be taken out

Do not need adhesives

Are comfortable because they do not press down on your gums

Allow you to experience the hot and cold of your food, as well as the taste

Allow you to bite with increased force (up to 70% more), so you can eat all of your favorite foods again

Prevent bone deterioration

Restore your facial features

How do Cosmetic Dentists Bondi Junction All-on-4 dental implants compare to traditional implants?

The All-on-4 dental implant technique utilizes only four implants per arch, whereas traditional implants utilize anywhere from six to eight implants, or more, in each arch. The implants of the All-on-4 procedure are also placed at an angle, which allows for increased contact by using the natural support of your bone. In addition, the All-on-4 procedure requires no bone grafting for most patients, which is common in traditional implant procedures. Therefore, All-on-4 dental implants save time, money, and discomfort.

How long is the All-on-4 dental implant surgery?

The surgery takes approximately 2.5 hours per arch.

What is the success rate with All-on-4 Dental Implants?

Published studies show a 98% success rate using All-on-4 dental implants.

Who is the ideal candidate for All-on-4 Dental Implants?

The ideal candidate for the All-on-4 dental implant procedure from The Implant Centre at Cosmetic Dentists Bondi Junction Dental Implants is someone who is currently wearing dentures or who will need dentures in the future. Age doesn’t matter but dental implant candidates should be in good health.

Where will my replacement teeth be made?

The Implant Centre at Cosmetic Dentists Bondi Junction Dental Implants does everything in-house. Your new teeth will be designed by certified lab technicians on-site. In fact, every part of your procedure, from consultation to follow-up care happens under one roof

Will my results look natural?

Absolutely. The All-on-4 dental implant technique gives you permanent teeth that look, feel and function just like real teeth. No one will know you have implants unless you tell them.

Why don't I get my permanent set of teeth the day my implants are placed?

As with any surgery, you need time to heal. However, you will not leave our office without teeth! A temporary set of teeth will be placed on your implants. Once the healing process is complete, your permanent teeth will be placed at a follow up visit approximately six to eight months after surgery.

What if I just need implants on my bottom arch? What if I someday need All-on-4 dental implants on both arches?

Cosmetic Dentists Bondi Junction All-on-4 implants can be placed on just the upper or lower arch. Your implant specialists will evaluate your circumstance and if he or she feels you might eventually need replacement teeth on both the upper and lower arches, he or she might suggest performing the procedure on both arches at the same time. This provides better results while also saving time and money. Your doctor will work with you to determine what best meets your needs both health wise and cost wise.

What type of cleaning is required after an implant is placed?

Dental implants should be treated like your natural teeth, daily brushing and flossing is recommended. Our team of specialists and dental hygienists will review oral hygiene instructions with you and will recommend the most appropriate oral hygiene treatment plan to fit your needs.

Are there any additional costs/fees to expect?

All fees will be discussed prior to surgery during the consultation appointment.

Cosmetic Dentists Bondi Junction Two-Stage Implants: A two-stage procedure involves surgery to place the implant into the jaw bone and close (stitch) the gum tissue. Several months after healing, a minor surgery is performed to attach an abutment and temporary restoration.

Cosmetic Dentists Bondi Junction Endosteal (Endosseous) Implants: Placed in the jaw bone, endosteals are the most commonly used type for two-stage implant procedures. Placed primarily as an alternative to a bridge or removable denture, endosteal implants include screw types (threaded), cylinder types (smooth) or bladed types.

Cosmetic Dentists Bondi Junction Single-Stage Dental Implants: A single-stage procedure involves surgically placing a longer implant into the jaw so it is on the jaw bone, with the top level with the gum tissue, after which the gum tissue is closed (stitched), leaving the implant head visible. As a result, after several months of healing, the abutment and temporary restoration can be attached without the need for minor surgery to expose the head.

Cosmetic Dentists Bondi Junction Subperiosteal Implants: Placed on the jaw bone within the gum tissue, with the metal implant post exposed to hold the restoration, subperiosteals are the most commonly used type for single-stage dental implant procedures. Subperiosteals are primarily used to hold dentures in place in patients with insufficient bone height.

Coatings Types

Although most dental implants are made of titanium, the surface — which affects the long-term integration and stability of treatment — can vary. A porous surface contributes to more bone contact than a machined titanium surface. Other surfaces include a grit-blasted or acid-etched and roughened surface, a microgrooved or plasma-sprayed titanium surface, and a plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite coating.

Connector Types

Implants also may be categorized based on the shape/type of their head. All implants require the restoration and abutment to be attached or screwed to the head. For this purpose, there are three main connector types:

Internal Hex Connectors: Shaped like a hexagon, an internal hex connector is an opening in the implant head into which the restoration/abutment is screwed.

External Hex Connectors: Also shaped like a hexagon, these connectors are atop the implant head.

Internal Octagon Connectors: Shaped like an octagon, an internal octagon connector has an opening in the implant head into which the restoration/abutment is screwed.

Implant Sizes. Another way to categorize implants is based on their size (also called platform), which dictates where they generally can be placed in the mouth. However, every case is different, and individual spacing and bone availability needs may dictate the use of a different size.

Standard Platform: Standard dental implants range in size from 3.5 mm to 4.2 mm in diameter. These comparatively shorter and narrower implants are most commonly placed toward the front of the mouth.

Wide Platform: Wide platform dental implants range in size from 4.5 mm to 6 mm in diameter and are placed primarily in the back of the mouth.

Cosmetic Dentists Bondi Junction Mini or Narrow Body: Mini or narrow body dental implants range in size from 2 mm to 3.5 mm in diameter and are placed primarily in patients with insufficient space between their tooth roots to accommodate a larger size. They also may be placed when the patient has insufficient bone density.

What is a Cosmetic Dentists Bondi Junction Dental Implant?

One and Two Stage Systems

In some implant systems the implants are placed, covered with the gum tissue and left to integrate or fuse to the bone. In these two stage systems, the implant is uncovered (stage two) and a small connector, called a “healing abutment” is attached to the implant which connects it to the mouth above the gum. The gum tissue heals around it. After a 4-6-week period crowns can be fabricated for tooth replacement. In the one stage system, the implant is left exposed at surgery, slightly protruding through the gum tissue. The two stage systems are initially more protective; however each system has its place, merits and indications.

Types of Implants and Restorations

There are now more than 40 different types of what can now be termed traditional or standard implants available today. There are also two others, mini and micro-mini implants. Mini implants are like traditional implants but usually smaller in diameter whereas micro-mini implants are a variation of the now more traditional implant design, but smaller, narrower and more screw like in appearance, they are more temporary in nature and designed to be easily removed.

Types of Implant Restorations:

Single tooth replacements: use one implant and as the name suggests support a single crown

Multiple tooth replacements: multiple missing teeth can be replaced with multiple implants supporting fixed bridgework as small as a 3-unit bridge supported by two implants, or with multiple implants supporting a greater number of teeth. Usually a minimum number of 4-8 implants are needed to replace a full arch (jaw) of teeth, 10 or more crowns by fixed bridgework Combinations of fixed and removable bridgework: generally, where implants are used to support a section of fixed bridgework, to which is attached a removable section

Over-dentures: where two or more implants, either standard or mini-implants, are placed to provide stabilization of the denture and preserve the underlying bone. Whereas most traditional full dentures press directly on the gum and bone causing bone loss by resorption, implant supported over-dentures protect the bone. Over-dentures are now considered the standard of care by the American Dental Association for the patients who have lost all of their teeth in one or both jaws

Anchorage for tooth movement (orthodontics): Implants, either standard, mini, or micro-mini implants, are now being used to provide very stable and non-movable anchor units to allow quicker and easier tooth movement

Temporary bridgework: utilize micro-mini implants which are later removed when the permanent implants are healed and teeth permanently replaced. They ensure that at no time will a person be without teeth and can therefore be socially comfortable and functional

Your dentist will select the type of implant that has been evaluated for bio-compatibility, supporting research and to provide tooth replacement.
